Pause and Realignment
This week, there will be no Penguin Producer Podcast.
Now, it’s not going anywhere, and more will be coming. Over the course of the last 6 weeks, Ryan and I have worked to figure out just what we will present, and how we will present it. Over the time, I’ve worked on learning the audio angle to gain enough experience to take it to the next step. And we will need to take this to the next step.
I am not, strictly speaking, an advocate. I don’t really want to tell you what is available on the Linux platform, I want to go further, instead showing you how to do it. Of course, this means I have to learn how those things are done in general before I can adapt them to the Penguin Producer Process. It’s slow going, but I’m working hard to learn as much as possible… as long as I don’t get bogged down in Minecraft. :-/
What is the next step?
In any tutorial process, there will need to be visual aids; you need to know what’s happening, but it goes a lot further for you to see what’s happening. That’s what separates the telling from the explaining, and what separates the hearing from the learning.
I’ve covered audio for the most part, and gave graphics a nice showing, but now it’s time to hit the big guns. Video needs to be broached, and when I come back, the Penguin Producer Podcast will be the video tutorial series I’ve been wanting it to be for a while now. Audio podcasts will still be released from time to time, although they will be for announcements and discussions, perhaps even interviews.
So, thanks for listening, and please bear with us as we turn “listening” into “watching.”
Sounds great! Personally, I think that’s exactly what’s missing (or did I miss it?). I know there are sites explaining how audio processing and production work in general. But I’d love to see hands on examples using the Linux tools.
Thank you for your Podcasts and your helpful blog posts! Keep it up!
Thanks. It helps me to know that people find this stuff useful, and I really hope that one day, others will join in; I don’t want to be the only penguin producer out there. In fact, if you are a penguin producer, whether you make music, podcasts, films, or artwork, let me know! I’d love to know what’s out there, so I can draw more attention to those projects, perhaps even add links to the sites on the right.
While I work to learn the process of making the video podcasts, I will blog about what I learn. The intro has been redone, and you can check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwkRyQN39Ic The video was done entirely in Blender… it’s amazing what you can do once you figure out the process of sticking videos on plane objects; that’s how I got the four-pane animation.
The process is somewhat slow going; I am learning a lot, but I’ve still got things I need to figure out before I start assembling videos, and there’s a lot of animations I need to construct for the visual aids for the first few episodes, so this isn’t going to start right away. Once I have a sufficient library of animations and workflows, the podcast should be pretty easy to assemble.
Also, keep in mind, this is not going to be only about audio; I’ve moved beyond the premise of the original Linux Home Recording website. I intend to cover graphics and video as well, and will very likely put a lot of focus in Blender, Inkscape, Gimp, and Synfig, as well as the Jack platform.
